Philosophy on Division 1 and Division 2 Teams

Beginning at the U12 age group, Soccer Maine coordinates and oversees league play in which teams compete against each other in an organized and more competitive fashion than seen at the U10 and U11 age groups. In an effort to keep this as fair and equitable as possible, Soccer Maine has created two divisions, with Division 1 being the more competitive of the two. At the beginning of the season, teams are required to declare themselves either Division 1 or Division 2.

Beginning with the 2008 fall season, FYSA will field Division 1 and Division 2 teams, numbers permitting, which is the format followed by the vast majority of other clubs.

Within this system, we continue to strive to maintain an environment in which the children have the best experience athletically and socially. We have found that grouping children by ability level results in their maximum development as soccer players. The primary objective at this age is skill development, which is best served by getting children the maximum number of touches on the ball and the maximum amount of involvement in the game as possible. The Division 1 and 2 system directly supports these goals. That is to say, the creation of the two divisions is not intended to create talent-rich teams, but rather achieve a parity of ability levels conforming to Soccer Maine's system, and resulting in the most productive practice and game situations for the players.

Over the years, we have found that the success of the system depends upon continued support from coaches, players, and parents. Perhaps more than any other factor, good coaching that stresses skill development and team-building is critical. Which is why, in the absence of a qualified coach for a Division 2 team, FYSA now makes a great commitment to hiring a qualified trainer or coach to ensure the highest level of instruction. We strive to communicate the proper values to all of the children, so they learn the importance of enjoying the sport and developing as players, as opposed to winning championships. We do our best to try and accommodate all of the children in our town, and feel that added cooperation from the community in promoting all of the positive aspects of the sport and league will go a long way in making all of the players feel quite comfortable.
