2010 FYSA Teams

A note to parents and players from the FYSA Board:

In all, more than 330 boys and girls have registered for the 2010 soccer season. Clearly, soccer is very much alive and well, in Falmouth.

For the U-9, U-10 and U-11 age groups, teams are created via a blind draw and players are assigned randomly to teams. There are no tryouts at these age groups - teams are balanced with a wide range of talent, athleticism and experience on each team.

As many of you may be aware, beginning at the U12 age group, Soccer Maine coordinates and oversees league play in which teams compete against each other in an organized and more competitive fashion than seen at the younger age levels. In an effort to keep this play as fair and equitable as possible, Soccer Maine has created two divisions, with Division 1 (D1) being the more competitive of the two. Within this two-tiered system, FYSA has found that grouping children by ability level results in their maximum development as soccer players AND a positive experience both athletically and socially.

At times, adherence to these guidelines does not always make for popular decisions in assigning players to D1 and D2 teams. The FYSA Board, with considerable input from coaches and independent evaluators (many of who have decades of experience) has established the rosters for the 2010 season. We feel the rosters are fair, balanced and support the goals and mission of the organization. The team sizes are also within guidelines established by Soccer Maine.

It's important to state that FYSA is equally committed to developing soccer players in both divisions, and we are in discussions with professional development coaches to work with players and coaches this year, with an emphasis on developing the skills of the D2 teams. We will have more information on these exciting program enhancements in the coming weeks.

The season will start toward the end of August. Please look for communication from your coaches toward the end of summer regarding practice schedules. If you have any questions prior to the start of the season, please contact your coach.

AAll of us at FYSA look forward to another great season of soccer in Falmouth. Enjoy your summer!

PARENTS PLEASE NOTE:
FYSA is a non-profit organization that relies heavily on parent involvement for a successful program. There are many opportunities for you to be involved, and we encourage you to please help out where you can, be it a coach, team administrator or board member. In addition, FYSA's annual Fall Classic tournament is our sole fund raising effort each year. It is an expectation that every family who has a child playing on a FYSA team cover at least one volunteering shift during the tournament. Much more on the Fall Classic in the months to come.
